EMBRACING CARE

Accessible Homes Australia’s 24-hour On-site Support Service tenants, with carers providing assistance for those living with a high level of physical support needs.

One such resident is dual amputee Jason Parker, who for years resisted care for fear of losing his remaining independence, opting to live with his parents for almost 12 years, while enduring countless surgeries.

“These carers have seen me at my most vulnerable and through these experiences we’ve formed a caring relationship like family – sisters from other misters,” says Jason.

“For them to dedicate their life to caring for others, I believe they are living angels.”

A SECOND CHANCE

Jason was injured in a car accident 12 years ago, suffering head and spinal injuries and subsequent health issues which led to him losing both legs and relying on the use of a wheelchair.

“I wasn’t in a chair till five years ago, so I’ve seen life with and without a wheelchair,” says Jason.

“At the time I lost my second leg everything was pretty grim, with not much hope. Fast forward to now and living here is the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

With the support of his family and NDIS funding, Jason was approved for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) and able to move into AHA’s Hope Island apartments where he’s lived for eight months – a change that he says saved his life.

“You begin to appreciate life and all it has to offer when you learn it’s about to be taken out of your hands,” says Jason.

“Everything that I have today is a true blessing, a second chance at life. I feel it’s empowered me and knowing I have a place to live long term is one of the things that’s saved me.

“With all the services available in my new home, it’s allowing me to live my best life.

“The confidence it’s given me is astounding, knowing that I can live independently and safely thanks to my modified home and the incredible concierge staff. It’s given me the ability to have this second chance at life.”

LIVING WITH ANGELS

In Australia, there are currently 30,000 people living with extreme functional impairment or very high-support needs. Approximately half of these individuals have been granted some kind of disability accommodation, often in aged-care facilities and institutions, with the majority being unsuited to their specific needs.

AHA’s commitment to providing SDA in mainstream communities has been transformative for the 18 participants living in their completed apartments.

The team is now working on new projects that will give more people the freedom that comes with independent living and the peace of mind of onsite care.

“Living independently and having my own purpose-built space is wonderful,” says Jason.

“The Hope Island units have incredible facilities, but the greatest aspect is the on-site support

“They are my lifeline. They not only take care of me and assist with my daily activities, but they’re always there anytime I need, even if it’s just to sit with me when I’m in pain. They are angels.”
